| March 17th - 21st Lea Kitchener and I flew
to Washington DC to meet with my partners
from Mito Japan. Ms. Kitchener’s partners
will visit our school in the Fall. We did
bonding activities while viewing the Nation’s
capitol and monuments. We found Sue Leister’s
husband’s name on the Vietnam War Memorial
and did a rubbing for her. Our Japanese partners from Mito Japan visited Oak Park School for the week of March 21st - March 28th. Their goal was to view a school for disabilities in American and learn as much as possible about our Culture and Educational system while here for such a short time. We kept our guests very busy. The very first evening was spent experiencing the Sarasota County Fair ! Their first day, they were welcomed by our staff at a breakfast social. That evening they taught Japanese sign language and culture to a class at USF. During the week they viewed classes in the Transition team, Middle School, the High School, DAT and support personnel ( Art, Music, PE, gardening, recycle, OT, speech and Hippo therapy). Riverview High School’s ASL class came to Oak Park and did Easter and Spring activities with my class. We even had an Easter egg hunt ! Tuesday afternoon we went to Myakka State Park to climb the canopy bridge and view the alligators. Wednesday our guests were honored to help participate in a flag burning ceremony to learn what Americans do with older flags. This custom was very different from theirs. Thursday we had a Transition Team breakfast and did a CBI to Sarasota High School’s ASL class. My students were excellent during the class with the High School group and got a pizza party at SHS for lunch. Friday we had a guest reader from the community share her favorite children’s story with my class. We colored Easter eggs and had a Team BBQ for lunch. Many thanks to the wonder Transition team who worked very hard to make that afternoon of activities happen. Thanks to Stephanie Peters from the Middle School Team who gave us great seats at the Sailor Circus Friday night ! We got to see Max from the Pro Team do his act !! Saturday we were able to go see Mote Marine and thanks to my volunteer, Lorienne White, we got a behind the scenes tour to see a dick dolphin and the classrooms at Mote. After our tour we saw the Cleveland Indians play the Boston Red Sox at Ed Smith Stadium. Many thanks to the staff at Oak Park for making the visitors feel so welcome. They commented on it frequently and I received a notice from the Director of the Master Teacher’s Program telling me how pleased they were with their visit. This summer, Lea Kitchener and I will fly to Japan and work in 2 separate schools for 6 weeks learning about Japanese education for their disabled population. --Angie Craft |
