2002 June 24till July 8th Mister McElroy at Shikigaoka Elementary School

６月２１日、技術担当の真鍋の家で、歓迎パーティーを行いました。Mr. McElroy は、疲れも見せず、がんがん日本のビールを飲んでくださいました。 校長・教頭とのスリーショットです。 Vice principal Hirita, Mister McElroy and principal Yoshimasu at welcome party hosted by Kazauki Manabe (the bar-b-que king).

６月２４日、いよいよ四季が丘小学校にMr. McElroyが来校されました。歓迎式では、あら かじめ、日本語のご挨拶も考えてくださっていて、子ども達に話してくださいました。 Mister McElroy is introduced to the student body after the Peace Meeting in the gym. The welcome ceremony allowed the students and staff of Shikigaoka Elementary School to officially meet the visiting Fulbright Master Teacher.

歓迎式のまえに行われた、児童集会「平和集会」の様子です。Mr. McElroyは、興味深そう に、その一部始終をビデオカメラに納められていました。 Students present projects and sing at the June Peace Meeting held in the Shikigaoka School Gym.

６月２７日、５年生の総合的な学習の時間を参観していただきました。環境教育に関わりEMを 使って、各クラスで花を育て、実験・観察を行っています。生ゴミを堆肥に変えて利用するという ことで、Mr. McElroyも興味深く参観していただきました。 Mister McElroy visits with 5th graders as they study the virtues of compost and potting soils. All three 5th grade classes grew a variety of plants to see which growing medium produced the best results.

６月２７日、２年生の水泳を参観していただきました。このとき、全体指導していた先生のことを Mr. McElroyは、スイミングティーチャーと後に呼ばれていました。 As Mister McElroy looks on, the second grade classes are given swim lessons by their classroom teachers. Students get this instruction maybe one or two times per week in the school pool.

同じく６月２７日、４年生の総合的な学習で地域の伝統工業に学ぶ授業を校内研修で、四季が 丘小学校職員とともに参観されました。仏壇作りのプロの職人さんに厳しく・楽しく子ども達が学 んでいく授業でした。木の彫り方はもちろん、職人さんから学ぶことのたくさんある授業でした。 Visiting artists teach students woodcarving skills. The students carve, stain and apply gold leaf over a series of six hour long lessons. The Hiroshima area has an outstanding reputation and long tradition of fine woodworking.

７月２日、５年生の合同理科ということで、体育館にて広島ガスさんによるサイエンスショーが行 われました。ものが燃えるための条件を実験を通して教えてくださったり、そして液体窒素による ものの凍結実験など、とても興味深いものを実演してくださいました。また、この日は、廿日市市 内にこの度、来られているアメリカの先生方が四季が丘小学校に集まる日で全員の先生方にこ のサイエンスショーを参観していただきました。 Two women from the gas company demonstrate the various properties of hot and cold gasses to the students and four visiting Fulbright Master Teachers. The women were accompanied by an actor wearing a giant inflated suit that represented the earth.
