ホテルのロビーで顔合わせの後，バスに乗り込んで出発。
アメリカの歴史上重要な意味を持つ場所を見学して回ります。

ここから下の写真の説明にある英文はHolly Springs EleでPamさんが忙しい授業の合間を縫って書いてくださったものです。
ホワイトハウス

	Our first meeting on the steps near the White House. We listened to Dr. Jones speak in English and Maehara translated in Japanese. まずはじめに，ホワイトハウス近くの階段のところで説明を聞きました。 FMFのジョーンズ博士が英語で話す説明を前原さんが日本語に訳してくれます。
	This is a view of the White House where our President lives. これが，あの有名な，ホワイトハウス。アメリカ大統領が住んでいます。（鉄格子の間からズームアップしてとりました。）
	Here we are in front of the gate which surrounds the White House. ホワイトハウスのまわりを囲む門の前で。

ジェファーソンメモリアル

We are gathered on the steps of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. This is a place where people come to get attention to those causes and issues which continue to divide the country.
This is the Potomac River which divides the state of Virginia from Washington, D.C. These are Japanese Cherry Trees given to our country by Japan. ワシントンDCとバージニア州を隔てるポトマック川の岸に並ぶ桜の木々。日本から贈られたものです。（毎年桜祭りが開かれるらしいけど，この時はまだつぼみでした。）
We are standing in front of the statue of Thomas Jefferson. He led our country in its early days. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence. トーマスジェファーソン像の前で。彼はアメリカの国ができた頃，この国を導いた人です。独立宣言の起草者でもあります。
The Jefferson Memorial was built to honor Thomas Jefferson. He was the third president of the United States. He was an educator, farmer, and scientist. ジェファーソンメモリアルはトーマスジェファーソンをたたえて建てられました。彼は第３代合衆国大統領であり，教育者であり，農民であり，科学者でもありました。

リンカーンメモリアル

	Dr. Jones is standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial telling us about how important this place is to Americans. ジョーンズ博士がリンカーンメモリアルの階段に立ち，アメリカ人にとってこの場所がいかに重要かということを語っています。（リンカーンメモリアルもジェファーソンメモリアルも白くて大きな建築物なので，写真をパッと見ただけではどっちのメモリアルの写真なのかよく分かりません。前後の写真から考えて一生懸命選びました。たぶん，間違えてはいないと思います・・・）
	Mrs. Jones and Ms. Hirai are listening to the speakers tell us about how Americans have come to these steps in front of the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate things that unite us as a nation, and focus on things that still divide us. 自分たちを国家として結びつけるものを祝い，いまだに分断させているものに目を向けるために，アメリカ人はリンカーンメモリアル正面の階段を訪れるのだという話をジョーンズ先生と平井は聞いています。
	A picture of the Lincoln Memorial is on the back of a one cent coin. We call this coin a penny. リンカーンメモリアルの絵は１セント硬貨の裏に描かれています。１セント硬貨のことをペニーといいます。
	Mrs. Jones and Mr. Konishi are standing in front of the famous speech that Abraham Lincolon gave. It is called the Gettysburg Address. ジョーンズ先生と小西先生はアブラハムリンカーンが行った有名なスピーチの前に立っています。ゲティスバーグの演説です。（パムさんが有名なスピーチを朗読してくれました。学生時代に覚えさせられたgovernment of the people, by the people, for the people という部分は最後に出てきます。）
	Here we are standing in front of the statute of Abraham Lincoln. The statue was very big.. A picture of Abraham Lincoln is on the five dollar bill. アブラハムリンカーン像の前で。像はとても大きなものです。アブラハムリンカーンの絵は５ドル札になっています。
	This is the memorial built to honor the Americans who died in the Vietnam War. It is a black wall of stone with all the names engraved into it who died in this war. この記念碑はベトナム戦争で死んでいったアメリカ人のために建てられました。黒い石の壁にはこの戦争でなくなった人たち全員の名前が彫ってあります。
	This is a picture of Mrs. Jones looking at the memorial built to honor the soldiers who died in the Korean War. The white figures on the left are stautes of the soldiers. ジョーンズ先生が朝鮮戦争で亡くなった兵士たちのために建てられた記念像を見ているところです。左にある白い人物像は兵士たちの像です。（兵士たちは疲労困憊した表情でした）

We are now walking to the Capital building where our government is run.
It is the place of our legislative branch of the United States Government.

アメリカ政府を動かしている重要な建物に向かって歩いています。
合衆国政府の議会が行われているところです。

午後は学校ごとに行動
ユニオン駅のフードコートで食事をしたあと，指定された場所を回りました。

自然歴史博物館

	This is a reflection pool to remember World War II. We saw this on our way to the Museum of Natural Science. ユニオン駅から博物館へ歩いて行く途中，道ばたで見かけた記念碑。第二次世界大戦の時に，日本人を強制収容したことと関係があるものらしい。
	Here we are in the zoo bugs section of the museum. It was very interesting to see the unusual bug collection. 博物館の昆虫コーナーの前で。めずらしい昆虫を見ることができて，大変おもしろかった。
	Ms. Hirai and I are looking at some displays of bugs. This one showed some butterflies. ジョーンズ先生と平井は昆虫の展示に見入っています。これはチョウの展示でした。昆虫コーナーを見た後，アメリカ人参加者の会議があるため，パムさんはホテルへ。以下は日本人だけで見て回りました。
	ホープダイヤモンドと言って，世界一？のダイヤモンドがありました。比べるものが写っていないので大きさが今ひとつ分かりにくいかもしれませんが，このダイヤモンドケースの周りは大勢の人が取り囲んでいましたから，有名なダイヤモンドだと思います。
	ダイヤモンドの他にも，いろいろな宝石が飾ってありました。だれかプレゼントしてくれるとうれしいのですが・・・。
	宝石の原石も，たくさんありました。飾ってある物をお金になおしたら相当な価値があるものだろうな，と思います。

航空博物館

これが万博でみんなが並んでみた月の石？
誰も並んでいません。
すぐにさわることができます。

夕食はMrs．Jonesと一緒に近くのホテルへ

家族の写真を見せ合ったり，明神小と美鈴が丘高校・中学校との位置関係について簡単な図を書いて説明したり，不自由な英語でコミュニケーションに努めました。

食後，クレジットカードの使い方（チップを加算して書くこと）を教えてもらいました。
金額とそれに見合ったチップの金額が一覧表になったカードをいただきました。
メーリングリストで話題になっていたものですね(^-^)
