photo gallery Our bugs and soil project began on a warm, sunny day at the end of April. We decided to begin the adventure by capturing bugs first. The students were divided into three groups. Each group was assigned to collect bugs from three different areas around the school. The three areas included the lawn in front of the school, a patch of tall grass next to the school, and the courtyard behind the school. Students were given yardsticks and instructed to measure a 15cm. X 15 cm. square in their designated areas. After they had made the appropriate measurements, each group got to work. They used trowels to make a 15 cm. deep hole in the ground. They collected bugs from the hole and placed them in plastic containers. Once the bugs had been collected from each area, the students congregated back in the classroom to discuss their findings. After recording the types of bugs that they found, they set the bugs free in the courtyard.
The students were placed in the same three groups the next day. They were asked to collect and analyze soil that they would gather from their assigned bug collection area. Students used trowels and yardsticks to make the same measurements that had been made the day before. They used three separate plastic bags to collect samples from the top, middle, and bottom layer of the hole. After the students collected each layer and labeled each bag accordingly, they met in the classroom to debrief and record their findings.
